Foreword of The Annual Report, June 2017
Five years ago the president of the Cuomo Foundation,Maria Elena Cuomo, and its board of directors requested my involvement in the implementation of a long term strategy of development for the philanthropic organisation.
As an active supporter of this strategy,it is not my role to evaluate the coherence and extent of measurable success between this current plan of development and the original spirit and direction of its founders-one formulated in the Articles of the Foundation.
Over the last few years our actions have focussed on strengthening our capacity to confront today’s global challenges, principally the effects of climate change and its impact on vulnerable populations, access to education for the young and the social rehabilitation of sick children. In addition, we have continued to retain culture and art within our scope, undertaking varied projects embracing areas from both classical music and dance to preservation of indigenous cultural heritages.
Our capacity to understand and react to the issues raised in this recent period of actions may perhaps be viewed as a departure from the original vision yet our approach has permitted the Foundation to respond positively to some of the worlds contemporary problems.
It is thus not presumptuous to state that our Foundation has proven to grow and evolve while remaining true to its founding principles and original values.
We understand that there is a lot to achieve yet… Our actions, however modest, are committed and we are decisive on this road of adventure called Life.
